New Thomyk Podcast: Kindle →
This week’s podcast contains a nascent ill-thought-through meme you can join in with at home. Or at work. Or anywhere really. It’s brilliant.

Amazon creates first viable non-iPad tablet by not... →
Exactly. Amazon have realised that there’s a mass of space in the tablet market, and trying to take on Apple at something that Apple are already years ahead on, technology-wise, is just not the way to do it.

The Secret History of Star Wars →
Fascinating story of the journey of the original Star Wars negatives into the various Special Editions all the way down the current Blu Rays.

The Moon Under Water →
An essay on a fictional pub by George Orwell, a pub which has all the right traits of a perfect pub. I’d agree with most of his points here (especially the one about it being quiet) but a pub like this is still hard to come by now. Even harder if anything.

This week’s podcast contains a lengthy discussion (I call it a discussion, it’s really me ranting at Michael) about R2-D2, what the hell he is, and why you’d design him like that (you wouldn’t).

Marine Recruiters Visit Gay Center in Oklahoma →
“Although Marines pride themselves on being the most testosterone-fueled of the services, they also ferociously promote their view of themselves as the best. With the law now changed, the Marines appear determined to prove that they will be better than the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard in recruiting gay, lesbian and bisexual service members.” Got to love that attitude.

Unethical journalism: The depressing tale of... →
Many people have discussed the tale of Johann Hari this week, with many defending him. I can’t say I was a massive fan in the first place, but in the final analysis, I think Bagehot says it best - it’s not a matter of not knowing the trade, it’s a matter of character.

We made it. Thank you. →
Pleased to that the excellent clothes blog Put This On made their Kickstarter target and so will be filming their new series. I donated too, due to loving the series so much (although admittedly, I was a bit after the time limit).

If This Then That →
A great, easy to use site that will link various web services to each other (like saving all your Instagram photos to Dropbox, or posting Pinboard links to Tumblr, like this is doing).

Double-O Who? Meet history's unsung spies →
Interesting article on lesser-known spies from the Telegraph. Of course, presumably the best spies are the ones that you couldn’t write a Telegraph article about at all.

Chris McVeigh is one of the best Lego artists out there, and this article, although short, at least gives a few examples of his outstanding work.

Copyright Notice by PZ →
I can’t say I’d heard of the poet Louis Zukofsky. It seems like his idiot son is determined to make sure it stays that way. ““Fair use” is a very-broadly defined doctrine, of which I take a very narrow interpretation, and I expect my views to be respected. “ Oooh, we get to define our own laws now? Fun times. (via)
