Why did the London riots collapse so quickly? →
Excellent post on the Kings of War blog on why the London riots didn’t have any longevity, and how effective police tactics were.

Fascinating insight into how Apple uses the supply chain to screw over its competitors and help its own product launches.

David Mitchell on Victoria Beckham's UFO tweet →
Great piece from Mitchell, which deconstructs the utterly fatuous comments people make to celebrities on Twitter showing their own idiocy through their erroneous belief they’re much more intelligent than they actually are.

The Benjamin Franklin Effect →
Absolutely fascinating article on cognitive dissonance, and how we attempt to make sense of our own actions after they’ve passed by, for example, assuming we like someone because we’ve done them a favour.

Il Pleut. Greece has poured vinegar on the G20's... →
Paul Mason has managed to write one of the most depressing articles about the future of Europe I’ve read in a very long time, along the way making it clear how the Occupy movement is actually (perhaps inadvertently) a barrier to the success of the G20 (if, by success, you mean stabilising the international markets), and why, through all of this, the winners are the rich, undemocratic states...

"You should have your tongue ripped out": the... →
What’s most depressing about this article from Helen Lewis Hasteley at the New Statesman is Eleanor O’Hagan’s comment that in order to avoid abuse, she changes the subjects she writes about. I don’t blame her for this, I mean, who wants to have a torrent of abuse every day? But it’s terribly sad.

Simon Jenkins doesn’t get it: protest and nuisance... →
Not sure I quite agree with every word, but Dorian Lynskey makes a number of very persuasive points on the Occupy movement in this article, tying the movement into the long and noble (if broadly ineffective) history of British dissent through protest.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service by Ian Fleming
Still not an amazing book, but better and marginally less preposterous than some of the more recent Bonds. It’s not particularly discriminatory either, as Fleming books go, despite being lazily sexist more or less throughout. The plot’s not bad and placing an unarmed Bond in danger in a comparatively plausible way is quite well done. The overall conspiracy is, of course, utterly...
