I’ve just cleaned out my wardrobe (since I don’t have a closet, seeing as I haven’t murdered anyone, I’m not pretending not to be gay and I’m not American) and this advice was very useful.
I like the Geoff Barrow profile. I had no idea he had a hand in Tricky’s ‘Maxinquaye’. I have fond memories of that album. I had it on cassette. I remember cleaning my first car (’84 Accord) top to bottom, inside and out, before putting it in the tape deck. As strange as it sounds, I remember feeling my car was too dirty for such clean, innovative sounds. It was as if the music deserved better.
Neither did I before reading this, although I was aware that the whole Bristol scene was rather incestuous, as is pretty clear when you listen to Maxinquaye, Blue Lines and Dummy where various tracks share lyrics, and backing samples etc. But I love *love* all three of those albums. Maxinquaye’s an album that I kind of save for special occasions and it brings a hoard of memories, good and bad, flooding back.
